PPHSA is pleased to offer sector-based training programs. These courses offer legislative awareness and safety training on the most important health and safety concepts - and the most prevalent hazards - shared by a majority of workplaces within the pulp, paper and corrugated sectors.

Basic Machine Safety

Machinery within the pulp, paper and corrugating industries has the potential for causing severe injuries and must be adequately safeguarded. Machine related hazards result in some of the most serious injuries within our industry. This course provides effective strategies for recognizing, assessing and controlling hazards associated with machinery and equipment processes. Participants are given the components of a machine safety program and the tools to create a formal machine safety program to ensure comprehensive safety and health around machinery and equipment. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º How to describe the hazards associated with the use of workplace machinery and how injury can    occur.
º Relevant legislation, standards and guidelines that apply to workplace machinery.
º How to identify and assess the risks associated with the use of workplace machinery.
º Ways of controlling the associated hazards.
º How to prepare an action plan to identify, assess and control the hazards associated with machinery    in the workplace.

Chemicals and Exposure to Toxic Substances

From the time you arrive at work until you leave, you may use or come into contact with dozens of potentially hazardous materials. This course provides effective strategies for recognizing, assessing and controlling chemical hazards in the workplace. Participants will learn about relevant legislation, standards and guidelines and will prepare an action plan to deal with chemical hazards that cause injury and illness. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º How to describe chemical hazards and how they can cause injury and illness.
º Relevant legislation, standards and guidelines that apply to the assessment and control of chemicals    in the workplace.
º How to recognize and assess chemical hazards.

Confined Space Entry

Work in confined spaces can be extremely dangerous due to the potential for buildup of hazardous gases or dust, or due to concentrations oxygen that can result in the immediate life-threatening hazards of suffocation, fire or explosions. Improper identification procedures and substandard hazard recognition of a confined space can result in a life threatening injury. This course provides effective strategies for identifying hazards associated with confined spaces, risk assessment, proper entry procedures and rescue techniques. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The legislative definition of a confined space and its implication.
º Confined space hazards.
º The responsibilities of workplace parties within a confined space program.
º The elements of a confined space program, assessment and plan.
º The requirements of a rescue plan.

Due Diligence & the IRS

Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act is built upon the principle that all workplace parties must work together to identify and resolve health and safety problems and concerns. This concept is known as the Internal Responsibility System. This course explains the relationship between the Internal Responsibility System and Due Diligence using group exercises and case studies. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º Employer, Supervisor and Worker duties and responsibilities under the OHSA.
º The Internal Responsibility System for the safe performance of work.
º The definition of Due Diligence and the establishment of a Due Diligence program.
º How to use the IRS and Due Diligence to form the basis for effective management of health and    safety.

Emergency Preparedness

The importance of being prepared for any eventuality relating to man-made or natural disaster or emergencies cannot be overstated. This course provides participants with the knowledge to prepare their organization to handle emergency situations. Participants learn how to organize an emergency plan with key duties and responsibilities, prioritize actions for emergency situations, determine vulnerable areas and prepare counter-measures, and identify useful external resources. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The types of hazard associated with emergencies in the workplace and how injury can occur.
º Relevant legislation, standards and guidelines that apply to emergency preparedness in the    workplace.

Ergonomics Analysis

This two-and-a half day program enables health and safety professionals, ergo team members and engineers to evaluate jobs and workstations. This course focuses on the assessment of ergonomics concerns and features an ergo scoring system to help you prioritize your ergo projects. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º How to use referral sources such as injury statistics, employee requests, surveys, and line changes to choose projects for assessment.
º How to administer and summarize employee comfort surveys.
º How to use upper limb assessment tools and material handling assessment tools.
º How to use a 'Leg checklist', 'Vibration checklist', and 'Contact pressure checklist'.
º How to identify when to refer a project to an ergonomist for biomechanical or energy expenditure    analysis.
º How to develop a score based on your risk assessment results, injury history, employee exposure,    and employee comfort levels.
º How to create a final report summarizing your assessment results.

Ergonomic Design

This two-and-a half day program allows engineers, health and safety professionals and ergo team members to use ergonomics design guidelines for new and existing work stations and jobs. The course is very hands-on, with participants completing projects as the course progresses. The manual and quick reference guide is packed with usable design guidelines so you can apply them to a real-life project right away. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º How to run brainstorming sessions to develop solutions.
º How to research solutions using your available resources.
º Mock-up solutions to determine the specifications of a solution.
º How to choose the best solutions using cost benefits analysis.
º How to apply design guidelines to determine the specifications of a solution and to critique a blueprint.
º How to create a final report summarizing your recommendations.

Fire and Combustibles

The nightmare of an industrial fire can have devastating effects such as loss of life, permanent disfigurement due to burns, respiratory problems, property damage, plant closures and loss of jobs. This course provides participants with the knowledge to recognize assess and control fire and combustible hazards in the workplace. Through interactive workshops, participants will learn the major causes of industrial fires and how to apply safe work practices when in contact with flammable or combustible liquids and gases. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The nature of fire and legislation/standards applicable to fire and combustibles.
º Fire gases and their health effects on people.
º How to identify fire hazards in the workplace.
º Fire control techniques along with fire classifications and extinguishers.

Focus on Falls

In Ontario, one in five lost-time injuries involve falls and 80 people are injured every day by falling at work. This course provides simple but effective strategies and guidance in identifying and controlling slip, trip and fall hazards in the workplace. Participants also learn how to develop and implement a fall prevention program in the workplace using assessment tools. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The magnitude of the accidents associated with slips, trips and falls in our industry.
º Relevant legislation and standards that apply to falls on the same level and falls from heights.
º How to complete a walk-through of a work area to identify and assess slip, trip and fall hazards.
º How to identify practical ways to control slip, trip and fall hazards that are encountered.
º How to prepare an action plan on all items identified as actual or potential hazards.

Heat Stress

Workplace fatalities have occurred due to heat exposure. Operations involving high air temperatures, radiant heat sources, high humidity, direct physical contact with hot objects, or strenuous physical activities have a high potential for inducing heat stress in employees. This course provides participants with the skills to recognize, assess, and control heat hazards. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º How to take temperature readings.
º How and when to advise management of appropriate relief to offer.
º How to understand/apply applicable legislation and track data for due diligence.
º How to implement effective control methods including engineering controls.
º How and when downtime can be used as heat relief.

Incident Investigation (Basic)

Effective investigations are opportunities to improve your health and safety system and avoid repeating similar events in the future. This course provides a basic understanding of incident investigation in an interactive approach using participant's own knowledge and experience. Incident Causation and Analysis

All too often, incident investigations and the resulting recommendations lack meaningful information because they were poorly done and rushed. This results in wasted time and money on the organizations part, not to mention the missed opportunity to improve the safety of all employees. This course provides a thorough understanding of investigation and the various theories of causation. The course recommends a team-based approach to investigating and identifying the root causes of incidents and near misses. Participants will learn the role of effective investigations in safety management and learn how to gather information, analyze data and make useful recommendations for change. Industrial Ergonomics

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent more than 40% of all lost time injuries across the province of Ontario and are the single most expensive group of claims. Preventing MSDs can help protect employees, reduce costs, boost productivity and improve product quality. This one-day industrial ergonomics course provides a hands-on approach to identifying and resolving ergonomic concerns using available in-house resources. An industrial focus is used to apply ergonomic principles. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º Relevant legislation and standards.
º Upper limb and back injuries.
º How to use the Ergo Screening Tool to identify high-priority ergonomic problems.
º How to interpret a professional ergonomist's report.
º How to develop ideas for improvement, using a brainstorming approach.
º How to evaluate the effectiveness of ergonomic personal protective equipment.
º How to identify/use your in-house ergonomic resources.
º How to use employee feedback to ensure that problems are really solved.

Industrial Lift Truck Operation

The power of lift trucks makes them indispensable, but also dangerous. This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to recognize potential hazards, perform circle checks, monitor vehicle performance and safely operate various lift trucks. The course is designed in a modular format combining knowledge-based and skills-based units of instruction. It is intended for operators or potential operators of any of the following industrial lift trucks: fork lifts, clamp trucks, skid steer loaders, scissor lifts or low lift pallet trucks. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The different types of lift trucks, their designations and areas of use
º Legislated requirements for industrial lift trucks
º Principles of counterbalance
º How to conduct effective circle checks
º Operator safe driving habits
º Propane handling and battery care
º Safety operating habits of clamp trucks, forklifts, skid-steer loaders, low lift pallet trucks and scissor    lifts

Target Group

This course is intended for Industrial lift truck operators or potential operators.

This course varies in length from one to two days depending on the types of lift trucks used in the workplace.

Job/Task Analysis and Procedures

Within every occupation, a certain number of tasks or work activities exist that have high potential for resulting in an accident. This course is about reducing risk of accidental loss while at the same time improving safety, quality and productivity in the workplace. This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to conduct a comprehensive task analysis in order to develop written task procedures. The use of task analysis and written procedures is essential to a well-developed loss control program. Whenever work methods can be improved and written procedures applied, companies take a proactive stance against loss. Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Effectiveness

As the internal auditing team of your organization's health and safety system, JHSC members have the opportunity to positively impact health and safety effectiveness. This course provides JHSC members with understanding their function and legal duties so they may perform their responsibilities effectively. This course focuses primarily on the duties and responsibilities of committee members as described in the Occupational Health and Safety Act through interactive workshops that draw on participant experiences. The course also reviews how to organize and conduct meetings, how to write clear and concise reports, recommendations and guidelines for conducting accident/incident investigations and planned workplace inspections. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The history of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
º How to reference sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act dealing with committees.
º The components of an effective committee.
º The components of an effective committee meeting.
º What constitutes effective committee member training.
º Different personality types and how they contribute to the JHSC.

Living with Shiftwork

Shiftwork is a reality for about 30 percent of Canadians. Many of the world's largest industrial disasters have causes rooted in the effects of shiftwork. This popular session helps employees understand how and why shiftwork affects them. Participants learn practical strategies they can incorporate at home and at work to make shiftwork life more manageable. Factors such as sleep habits, diet and physical activity are examined. Participants develop their own personal action plans to effectively address their individual needs. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The effects (internal and external) of shiftwork.
º The basics of the science of sleep.
º Possible solutions to combat the effects of shiftwork.
º How to create an action plan to better deal with the effects of shiftwork.

Lifting Tips

This one-day lifting tips course will enable participants to lift safely, using 15 lifting techniques. The course also provides coaching plans that can be customized for your facility, including 'takeaways' to reinforce the tips. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The types of injuries associated with manual handling.
º How to identify workplace and individual factors that may discourage proper lifting techniques.
º Lifting safely, using 15 lifting techniques/tips.
º Other control measures, including administrative and engineering controls.

Lockout/Tagout

Failure to properly lockout has led to some of the most serious and life changing accidents our industry has ever witnessed. These accidents could have been prevented if the machinery was locked out properly. Lockouts are essential to the safe carrying-out of maintenance or repair work. This course provides practical tools and techniques around the concept of lockout as a systematic safety measure, and teaches participants how to generally lockout a system. Participants will learn how to identify energy sources associated with lockout and how to spot many of the common pitfalls in a lockout program. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:

Musculoskeletal Disorder(s) Prevention

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent more than 40% of all lost time injuries across the province of Ontario and are the single most expensive group of claims. Preventing MSDs can help protect employees, reduce costs, boost productivity and improve product quality. This course provides a practical approach to assessing risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. This module provides a thorough understanding of what MSDs are and what MSD hazards look like. The module will review primary hazards of force, posture and repetition as well as secondary hazards such as vibration, contact stress and work methods. Participants will review the province s MSD Prevention Framework and apply identification, assessment and control methods and tools in hands-on exercises. Noise

Hearing loss is the most widespread - and preventable - of all occupational health problems. And while it isn't always easy to spot, it is physically debilitating and has a devastating effect on contact with family, fiends and co-workers. This course provides simple but effective strategies for recognizing, assessing and eliminating or controlling risk in your workplace associated with noise hazards. Identifying workplace noise and developing practical programs for control, understanding the effects of noise exposure, demonstrating sampling and monitoring methods, and learning government standards for legal compliance are all covered. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:

º The hazards and health effects associated with noise exposure.

This course provides the foundation for establishing an effective occupational health and safety system, with defined structures for responsibility and accountability throughout the organization. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:

OH&S Act and Industrial Regulations

In today's ever changing legislative landscape, familiarity with what legislation applies to you and your workplace is a must. Everyone from senior manager to employee should be familiar with their legal rights and responsibilities. This course familiarizes participants with the organization and contents of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Industrial Establishments (the Green Book). Through hands-on exercises, participants build knowledge and skills to use the act and Regulations effectively on the job. The course is flexible enough to be tailored to the workplace and audience. Topics covered include: the duties, rights and responsibilities of the workplace parties; the Internal Responsibility System and due diligence; the role and powers of the Ministry of Labour inspector; the role of Joint Health and Safety Committees; and how to locate information in the Act and Regulations. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The Occupational Health and Safety Act and how it is organized.
º Application - who the Act applies to.
º The Internal Responsibility System.
º Duties of constructors, employers, supervisors, workers and suppliers.
º Refusal to work - who can refuse/procedures to follow.
º Reprisals, notices, enforcement.
º Offences and penalties.

One of the most pro-active health and safety activities an organization can undertake is planned workplace inspections. These inspections uncover potential losses and accidents before they happen, saving you and your employees from needless pain, suffering and associated costs. This course provides participants with knowledge of workplace inspection standards and the benefits of a well-planned inspection program. It further provides them with the skills and knowledge needed to conduct a planned workplace inspection - including the identification, classification and control of workplace hazards. Risk Assessment for Machine Safety

Moving machine parts have the potential for causing severe workplace injuries such as crushed fingers or hands, amputations, burns or blindness. In fact, each year in Ontario, there are about 7,500 workplace injuries involving machinery. This course provides simple but effective strategies for recognizing, assessing and eliminating or controlling risk in your workplace. A mix of in-class training, and interactive learning exercises, have participants conducting hands-on risk assessments and practicing how to use several assessment tools - including nomographs, risk tables and charts. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º The concept of risk, risk perception, risk assessment and analysis, and risk control.
º Applicable legislation dealing with machine safety.
º How to conduct risk assessments on actual machinery in the workplace.

A mix of in-class training and interactive learning exercises, have participants conducting hands-on risk assessments and practicing how to use several assessment tools. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:

Supervisory Skills Series

Day 1 - Introduction / The Act and Regulations, IRS & Due Diligence
º Includes sections on what the law says, understanding and using the "green book" , the importance    of the internal responsibility system, the defence of due diligence, establishing a due diligence    program and a due diligence test for supervisors.

Day 2 - Morning - Hazard ID & Planned Workplace Inspection
º Includes a summary legislated requirements, the 5 step procedure, hazard identification, hazard/risk    assessment, hazard management and control, and conducting an inspection.

Day 2 - Afternoon - Accident Investigation
º Includes sections on accident causation, accident investigation programs, accident reporting    procedures, and conducting an investigation.

Day 3 - Basics of Supervising Workshop
º Participants live a day in the life of a supervisor through real-life scenarios involving time management,    dealing with problems, conflict and violence, effective motivation and communication and delivering    effective safety meeting talks.

Train the Trainer

Whether you want to improve your facilitation skills, polish your presentation techniques, deliver tailgate meetings or meet the standard for PPHSA trainers, PPHSA's Train the Trainer program equips in-house training professionls for success. This course provides the basis for developing both effective facilitation and dynamic presentation skills. You'll learn how to lead a group, analyze group dynamics, motivate participants, set up a positive climate for learning, and deal with difficult participants. You'll have the opportunity to analyze your own instructional style and how to adapt it when necessary. A unique practice-teach session rounds out the program making this session highly interactive. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º How to promote learner participation and involvement using effective questioning techniques in a    training session
º How adults learn.
º How to use overheads, flipcharts and visual aids effectively in training.

Violence and Harassment Prevention in the Workplace

Changes to Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act as of June 15, 2010, create employer responsibilities for addressing violence, harassment and incidents of domestic violence in the workplace. The revised Act requires employers to develop policies for the prevention of violence and harassment, and to review those policies at least annually. Employers must also set up reporting and incident investigation procedures, as well as a process to deal with incidents, complaints and threats of violence.

This half-day training provides participants with all the necessary knowledge and tools to comply with every aspect of the new legislated requirements and to establish effective violence and harassment prevention policies in their workplace.

The program explains the definitions of violence and harassment in the Act and reviews the various factors that need to be considered when assessing and controlling the risk of violence and harassment in the workplace.

This course is intended for joint health and safety committee members, health and safety coordinators, supervisors, managers, directors and owners.

WHMIS

Anyone in the workplace who is exposed to or working near a controlled substance legally requires WHMIS training. This course provides participants with the knowledge to recognize the eight classification, their meanings and how to safety work with dangerous materials. Participants will also work through a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to understand the importance of the information it contains. At the end of this session, participants will understand and be familiar with:
º WHMIS legislation and the Hazardous Products Act.
º What products are controlled under WHMIS.
º WHMIS symbols, classifications and labels.
º Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), what information they contain and how to read one.
º How to recognize, assess and control hazardous materials.
